Faith

Rhema Youth Works is a Christian faith-based project and it is our faith and belief that underpins all that we do. Our passion is to see young people grow and succeed in every area of their life. To that end we offer and facilitate youth work that focuses on the physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual - the whole person.

We aim to be relevant in our work and that means being available to young people and sharing our lives and our faith with those young people who want to listen. A recent survey said that 50% of teenagers regularly pray. That means that the spiritual aspect of our work is meaningful to potentially half the young people who we work with. It also means that the other half of young people could have a good debate with us about the relevance our faith!

The word 'Rhema'

The word rhema is:

A Greek word

A biblical word

A creative word

It remains up to date

The project took the name Rhema because it aims to be a dynamic, creative project that responds to the needs of young people, therefore staying relevant and up-to-date.

Faith in action

Rhema Youth Works is just one of the projects that has grown up out of Community Church Hull. Below is some information about other projects that started from a desire to put Christian faith into action to positively impact people's lives in the community.

Hull Lighthouse Project
The project works alongside women in prostitution in the city of Hull, offering friendship, advice and opportunity for change. A team of trained volunteers staff an evening drop-in centre and outreach workers give ongoing help during the day. The drop-in is used by over 90% of the women who work on the streets and over 40 women have been helped out of a life of prostitution.

Holistic support covers help with drug use; hospital visits; support during pregnancy; liaising with social services; help finding suitable housing and furniture; practical help with budgeting; negotiating repayment of debts at low rates; visiting solicitors and probation; support during court appearances and in prison; practical help with retraining and education.

RESPECT
RESPECT meets on the Quadrant estate and is run by local residents with the aim of reviving community spirit. It offers friendship and activities, based at the Eternal Benefits shop on Inglemire Lane. This ‘shop’ acts as a morning pop-in three time a week, giving information (including a library of useful information and books), informal advice, bric a brac, clothes, bedding and small furniture items, and referrals to other agencies.

Regular events are held all year round including: family fun days, youth events, day trips for the elderly, street parties, aerobics, barbecues, sports, visiting speakers, musical acts, and competitions.

Relationships are built in the community, particularly with offenders and ex-offenders through street contact, youth initiatives, hospital visits, prison work and visiting families - much work has been done supporting the families of drug users.
